Ok, I have to admit...when it is HOT outside, I am in my pool!!! The kids wake up wanting to go swimming when they realize it is just too darn hot to play otherwise! My latest artworks have only been to paint the front door and mailbox of our new house.(so far no new pics...very busy, sorry!)
Let me tell you something about painting a front door that gets BLAZING sun in the morning...TAKE IT DOWN AND LET IT COOL OFF!. It was a regal red color and we chose a rather nautical blue. Not a navy or a royal but, a striking colonial blue. To hide the red I had to prime with a tinted primer and sand between coats. I also had to do laundry, make lunches, get popcicles, (yay mom!)and entertain guests that would come "to see the progress".
Mother nature is always a great pain when you try to do anything outside the climate controled walls of my home. Sure enough she tried rain, wind, and just plain unbearable humidity. All of which turned my one maybe 2 day project into a 4 day sticky nightmare! Nonetheless I got the paint done and hubby and I went about putting on the new hardware and deadbolt. Did I mention that the directions called for a 3/8 inch hole be cut? Oh yes...AFTER I finished painting the door and getting the paint dents from the old hardware buffed out, I was about to put a drill bit to my handy work...UGH! I got through it and the new hard ware went on great (at 11:30pm day 4)
I painted the mail box post the same as the house trim.(The house trim was painted by our friend Marcos. He did a fantastic job in the intense heat!)The mail box was painted to match the door. At first the paint took on a weathered blue jean look, but after a few more coats it looks snazzy. I had to make sure it would be dry enough so that the mailman would be able to put the mail in it the next morning. (Tip: start to paint the box after thay deliver the mail. that way you have till the next day OR the following Monday if you start Saturday...duh!)I even went so far as to paint the faded black plastic parts a silver to match the new door's hardware. Yes we are going all silver/nickle fixtures...funny...now it will be a never ending domino effect of changing lights, door knobs, and anyother "gold" fixture to silver. we laugh when it is payday...gee honey how many door knobs this time? Even your own house has "Artistic Needs".
I learn something from every project I attempt. If you learn from me then I will have saved you a little investment in asprin! Enjoy the summer to all of you weekend warriors! Remember to sand and swim between coats to keep you cool and to have sucsess with your painting projects.....more later I am going in for a late night swim!
